Nursery Curriculum

Our Aims

The aims are shared with parents and staff through the Nursery Brochure, email and the Improvement Plan on display on the bulletin board.              Amended 20.5.16

Successful Learners

At Bright Beginnings, we provide appropriate and challenging experiences which enable our children to develop effective communication, literacy, numeracy and thinking skills through a creative curriculum which reflects local and national guidelines. We support the needs of individual children and their families to enable them to achieve their full potential. We work closely with other agencies to ensure that we are embedding GIRFEC (Getting It Right For Every Child) in our daily practice. We provide high quality leadership, management and support to all our staff to ensure we are improving the quality of experiences, care and education of all children through a programme of staff appraisal and continuous professional development that promotes a strategy for raising achievement.

Confident Individuals

We ensure good health in all our children through strategies which promote physical, mental and emotional well-being. We provide a safe, stimulating environment where children know they are valued and feel happy and secure. Staff recognise and celebrate the achievements of all our children and support them in achieving success and the development of high self-esteem and a sense of worth.

Responsible Citizens

In our nursery, we have well established relationships with the local school and businesses within the community.  We have included members of the local community on our Eco committee. We value different social and cultural experiences within the nursery setting. Ensuring that all children are able to experience a calm, positive and safe environment that promotes good behaviour, self-discipline and respect for others.

Effective Contributors

We support the children in communicating ideas and feelings in a variety of ways. We consult with the children and use mind maps and floor books to encourage them to take responsibility for their own learning.  We provide appropriate resources and materials to support and challenge our children in the nursery to make their own choices, plans and decisions.

Curriculum for Excellence at Bright Beginnings

Here at Bright Beginnings Nursery our nursery curriculum follows the Curriculum for Excellence (CFE) placing focus on the value of learners’ experiences and how the role of the teacher or child care worker is so important in generating inspiring, challenging and motivating learning and teaching opportunities for the children in our care.

Through CFE we are ensuring that all children and young people are achieving their full potential. In order to do this our staff plan the children’s activities around what the children are interested in.  In our 3-5s rooms we have a variety of different methods of consulting with our children on what they want to learn.  Some examples of this are mind mapping and children’s meetings where staff sit with the children and openly talk and discuss what they want to learn about.  From these discussions staff plan activities to further children’s learning.

The CFE is split into 4 Capacities which are:

§  Successful Learners
§  Confident Individuals
§  Effective Contributors
§  Responsible Citizens

Staff provide activities for children which have breadth and depth and enhance their knowledge.   Not only will the activities provided look at the 4 Capacities they will also look at the 3 Core areas for learning in the CFE.  The core areas for learning are:

§  Literacy
§  Numeracy
§  Health & Wellbeing

Each activity planned by our staff will cross over into these 3 areas of learning.

Enabling all learners to maximise their potential is a key aspect of our role as child care practitioners at Bright Beginnings Nursery.   Children learn when they are playing and having fun!

We are supported in this through partnership working with Falkirk Council.
